Soroptimist of Oakland Founders

Founded October 3, 1921, S/I Oakland was the first club to be established within the world-wide network of clubs. S/I Oakland is a 501(c)3 organization and is committed to serving the needs of women and girls primarily within the cities of Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville. The club provides financial and volunteer opprotunities and other forms of financial support to Maxwell Foundation, Friendly Manor, Berkeley Chess Club, Girls for Sports, Breast Cancer, St. Vincent de Paul, Safe Place and many others. Each year the club also gives a Violet Richardson Award to a deserving high school senior and a Woman's Opportunity Award to a deserving woman retraining to reenter the work force.

Soroptimist International is committed to serving local, national and international communities. While actively participating in decision making. Soroptimist Program of Service activities encourage members to be an active influence for positive social change through Awareness, Advocacy and Change. Members are encouraged to be aware of and involved in the issues of society and to take positions of advocacy, encouraging governments and authorities  to ensure that gender and human rights concerns inform policy and action
